Olympia Amusements & Family Entertainment Centre – Back in the Day

We’ve had another delve into Nick Moore’s History of Blackpool and the Fylde Coast to find out more about the history of the Olympia.

What’s now the Olympia Amusements was the site of the Cleveleys Inn in the 1700’s. At various times called Fleetwood Arms Inn – originally – in the previous century, the Wheat Sheaf (1624), and the Hesketh Arms (1660). In later years, it became “Ye Olde Cleveleys Inn Café”. By then called the Cleveleys Hotel, and now on Garfield Road, it was sold at auction on the 29th of July 1868. The landlord was Richard Parr.

The Cleveleys had lost its drinks licence by 1872, but still took in visitors until the early 1900s. The building briefly housed the Ruskin Studios, but it was demolished in 1936. It was owned at the time of its demolition – by which time it was unlicensed – by MB Kirwan, a breeder of champion greyhounds who lived at The Towers. One of Mr Kirwan’s most famous dogs was “Champion Conn”.

Mason’s Amusements

In 1938 the complex was purpose-built on the site of the former Cleveleys Inn. But before it could be used it was taken over by the Home Guard.

In 1945 Albert Mason bought it and opened it as Mason’s Amusements. Then in 1958 Cleveleys earliest house, built in about 1880, was demolished to make way for an extended amusement arcade.

Albert went on to build the much-loved Children’s Corner in 1966 after taking over the loss-making Cleveleys Arena from the council.

He also bought the Odeon Cinema and turned it into the Orion Bingo, complete with a bar, renamed Albert’s Bar after his death.

Crown Leisure

In 2023, Crown Leisure bought Mason’s Amusements and have since spent a substantial amount of time and money on refurbishments. Now, the Olympia arcade sports distinctive art-deco signage in keeping with the building’s history. Refurbished and repaired inside and out, it’s a bright and clean modern arcade.
