This  website includes the wider Cleveleys area.

  • Thornton Cleveleys is the Marsh Mill Village area.
  • Thornton Village near the old level crossing and Bay Horse pub.
  • Little Thornton where Lamb’s Road meets Skippool Road.
  • Burn Naze on Fleetwood Road North around the Hillhouse site.
  • Stanah where the Wyre Estuary Country Park is on the banks of the River Wyre.
  • Skippool itself – which also meets the River Wyre.

Why is it called Thornton Cleveleys?

Thornton and Cleveleys are two separate places.

Cleveleys of course is the place next to the sea. Thornton is the slightly inland area where you’ll find Marsh Mill windmill.

The name is believed to have come from the railway station of the Preston and Wyre Railway. It was called ‘Thornton for Cleveleys’. Over the years the ‘for’ has gone, leaving us with the name we’re familiar with now.

Explore beyond Cleveleys

The Fylde Coast and Blackpool area offers something for everyone. There’s rural landscape to enjoy, hectic Blackpool and beaches. Enjoy lakeside walks in Lytham, outlet shopping at Affinity Fleetwood – and much, much more. We’ve covered it all at Visit Fylde Coast!
