Navigating the Promenade & Seafront

Step-Free Seafront Promenade

Flat Smooth Surfaces: The entire promenade consists of smooth concrete and paved pathways designed for easy rolling, minimizing bumpy terrain.

Rear Flood Wall Access: Seafront access points are available at frequent intervals through the rear flood wall, marked by sheltered seating areas. All standard promenade entries are flat and step-free.

Integrated Unlimited Seating: The stepped sea defences double as built-in seating along the lower promenade. Frequent standard benches with backrests line the upper walkways for regular rest stops.

Beach Ramp Access

The stepped seawall requires navigating steps down to the sand. A dedicated concrete ramp located roughly near the end of Beach Road gives beach access to visitors using wheelchairs, mobility aids, or pushchairs. You can stay on the ramp and get close to the beach, or use it for beach access at low-tide.

The ramp takes you beyond the foreshore where pebbles and shingle collect. Tidal conditions mean that Cleveleys beach is mostly hard-packed sand, but be aware of soft-spots and sinking areas. Sandbanks and channels also form here, which can lead to stranding as the tide comes in.

At high tide the beach adjacent to the steps is fully submerged. The top section of the more northerly Rossall Beach remains dry at high tide. However, it’s made up of pebbles and shingle which isn’t suitable for anyone with accessibility needs.

Important Safety Note: Always check tide times before accessing the shore. During stormy conditions, Wyre Council closes the coastal storm gates along the flood wall for safety. Do not attempt to go seaward of the flood wall when storm gates are engaged.

Sorry: due to the high tidal range and dynamic coastal conditions, Cleveleys beach doesn’t have boardwalks, wooden ramps or beach matting.

Exploring the High Street & Local Attractions

One of the beauties of the Fylde Coast is that it’s a largely flat terrain. This means it’s popular with older people and those who have additional accessibility needs. Mostly completely flat, there are hardly any slopes in accessible Cleveleys – it’s a disability friendly seaside town. The promenade and town centre are easy to navigate, without steep inclines.

Pedestrianized Shopping on Victoria Road West

The primary shopping street, Victoria Road West, runs directly inland from the coastal plaza. It features:

• A paved, flat pedestrian area, free from heavy road traffic. The main road (Victoria Road West) is one way and speed restricted.
• Dropped kerbs at all major intersections.
• Level threshold entry to almost all of the independent cafes, bakeries, high street shops, and banks.
• Outdoor seating zones with ample clearance for wheelchairs and scooters.

The Mythic Coast Artwork Trail

Cleveleys’ public art trail brings local folklore to life along the coastline. The artwork is situated in areas designed for easy approach. Three artworks are on the accessible level promenade surface – two are on the beach but can be seen from the footpath.

• The Sea Swallow: Located on the main promenade plaza at the top of Victoria Road West. Fully accessible on flat paving.
• The Shipwreck Memorial: Located on the main promenade at the end of Kingsway. Fully accessible on flat paving.
• Cleveleys sign: Don’t forget to stop for a selfie at the giant-sized letters, on the promenade near the Shipwreck memorial.
• Ogres Paddle: On the main promenade, opposite JD Gym. Fully accessible on flat paving.
• The Ogre: Situated directly on the sandy beach. Find him in a rock maze at the end of the stone groyne opposite Andrew Mellor Vets. Anyone in a wheelchair can view him from the accessible promenade wall above. The ramp opposite Beach Road provides beach access.
• Mary’s Shell: Situated directly on the sandy beach. Anyone in a wheelchair can view this 12-ton structure from the accessible promenade wall above. Get up close to it at low tide via the ramp opposite Beach Road.

Using buses operated by Blackpool Transport and Stagecoach you can travel to nearby towns including Poulton, Preston, and Lancaster.

• Catch a bus from the main, covered bus station, located off Rough Lea Road/next to B&M.

There is a taxi rank at the Victoria Road West end of Nutter Road. This is at the centre of the main shopping area.

• Victoria Road West Facilities: Conveniently located near the primary high street shops. Find them in the car park to the rear of Iceland (accessed via the alley at New Look).
• Cleveleys Bus Station: Disabled and ambulant toilets located at the bus station, opposite long stay car parking and close to the central seafront.
• Pro tip: bring a standard RADAR key when visiting to ensure smooth entry to locked council accessible restrooms.

Yes. The promenade was designed as a modern sea defense system offering flat, level concrete paths right along the coastline, making it one of the easiest walking routes on the Fylde Coast for individuals using mobility aids.

Are dogs, including assistance dogs, allowed on the beach?

Assistance dogs are welcome across all areas of Cleveleys year-round. For standard pets, seasonal restrictions apply on the central beach section between May 1st and September 30th. Northern stretches of Rossall Beach remain open to dogs all year long.
