You’ll find Marsh Mill Village just off the main A585 road between Cleveleys and Poulton. It’s a pretty courtyard complex of shops and houses, built around the striking landmark of the windmill.
As you approach it you can see the distinctive sails of the windmill, high above the other buildings.
- The address is Marsh Mill Village, Fleetwood Road North, Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire, FY5 4JZ. Ring 01253 887445 for more information.
Today, Marsh Mill Village is a courtyard complex with craft shops, other small shops, offices and a cafe. There’s a pub called Tavern at the Mill which opened in February 1990. Twelve is a fine dining restaurant that opened in April 2000.
Take a look around Marsh Mill Village
Marsh Mill Village opened on 28 August 1979, featuring the refurbished windmill, shops and cafes.
The centrepiece of the complex is of course the windmill itself. You’re welcome to look around the outside of it at any time, but the mill itself is only open during special events.

Marsh Mill Windmill
It hasn’t always been so well looked after through the years, but now it’s now Marsh Mill Windmill Grade 2* as listed by Historic England. Built in 1794 this mill has enjoyed a long and productive working life. There’s another page here with all the history of this now well-preserved windmill.
Fast forward to 1957, and the mill and adjoining house had been bought by Thornton Cleveleys Council for £1200. Storms in December 1962 blew two of the sails off, closely followed by a third. The fourth was removed for safety.
In 1964, Walter Heapy founded the Thornton Windmill Preservation Society and worked tirelessly to restore the mill. In 1965, after public demand, the Council undertook restoration work. New sails were added, the Reefing stage repaired and a new skeletal Fan-tail assembly fitted.
Now, it’s the finest, most complete and well preserved example of its kind in north west England.
The area around Marsh Mill Village
The Village isn’t far from Four Lane Ends. That’s where Thornton Cenotaph is, facing Thornton Little Theatre and the Library across the road.

It’s a pretty place – head along Victoria Road East and you’ll come to Thornton Village. But there’s also a variety of local shops in the area around Marsh Mill Village itself.
Adjacent to the mill you’ll find a Post Office, Tesco Local, fish and chip shop, pet shop and other local convenience stores. Just a little further along Fleetwood Road North are more shops and the local doctors surgery.
