For a relatively small town, there’s an amazing range of shops in Cleveleys – with just about everything you can think of. There’s big names and independents, chains and complete one-offs. In fact, Cleveleys residents can get pretty much most things here without ever having to leave! It’s also popular with people who live all across the Fylde Coast – attracting people from Fleetwood and Blackpool to do their shopping.
Shops in Cleveleys
Popular with tourists, most of the shops in Cleveleys are found in the town centre. From the coast adjacent to the clock shelter, Victoria Road West heads inland with shops and businesses as far as the Tramway pub near North Drive. End to end, it’s a longer shopping street than the Trafford Centre.
More shops are found along the A587 where it bisects the main high street along with the Blackpool to Fleetwood tramway. There’s also shops, cafes and businesses on most of the small side streets which branch off this main road.
Additionally you’ll find smaller clusters of shops in Cleveleys close to where people live and drive by. For example the shops along Rossall Road which are handy for passing motorists. And the ones near North Drive Park – close to Northfold School and in a popular residential area.
Here at Visit Fylde Coast, Cleveleys is our local town centre, and we love it! There’s a shop for most things, and, mostly sited close together, you don’t waste miles of energy walking from one to another. And if it’s raining you don’t get too soaked wet through because it’s easy to dodge from one to another! But you can check the weather here, before you visit!
From Sea to the Blackpool-Fleetwood Tramway
The seaward end of Victoria Road West begins at the small roundabout which is home to the towns much loved clock shelter. In this area you’ll find touristy businesses – amusement arcades and ice cream parlours and traditional seaside stalls. There’s a collection of excellent cafes selling fish and chips, hot cooked meals, snacks and great big cakes!
Bob round the corner to the bus station at Rough Lea Road for the best seaside fish and chips at Kays. At the other side of the bus station at Princes Road is B&M – one of the chains first branches and still incredibly popular today. The pedestrianised Princes Road loops back to Victoria Road West and lots more shops. Popular with elderly people and the disabled, there’s a few mobility equipment shops and you can hire a scooter too.
The central section of shops in Cleveleys is a busy, vibrant spot. All the way from Peacocks to the tramway, both sides of the street are full of stores. The big name brands – like Iceland, Home Bargains, Poundland, Superdrug, TG Jones (WH Smith) and Boots are mostly on the wide-side of the street. At the other side of the road is a mixture big names and independents in the mostly smaller units. There’s Bon Marche, The Works and Card Factory and a large Costa Coffee. Plus one of Marks and Spencer’s best-performing Simply Food stores.
Tram lines to The Tramway (ie the Pub!)
The Blackpool to Fleetwood tramway creates a natural demarcation line in the town. At the seaward side you’ll find most of the traditional shopping. The landward side tends to be more food and drink plus service businesses.
From the main cross roads are banks, insurance and solicitors, hairdressers and beauty parlours, along with estate agents and other service businesses. There’s the Jolly Tars – a popular Wetherspoons. Plus the newly converted NatWest (now The District), Backstage Bar and long established Kentucky Fried Chicken and plenty of takeaways – Chinese, Thai, pizza and Subway.
It’s also where you’d head to kit out your house – from Style Carpets, Cleveleys Carpets and BM – the large furniture shop.
Crescent East/West and Rossall Road
As if all that’s not enough, the shops in Cleveleys continue along the tramway around the main traffic light junction with Victoria Road West. The A587 is Crescent East/West at the southern side of the junction (the Aldi side).
At Crescent East there’s the medical centre, solicitors and accountants. Closer to the main cross roads, is the Coffee Barn and The Vault bar with Ormrod’s Solicitors on the corner. On the opposite side at Crescent West is a large purpose-built Aldi complete with car park. Around the crescent is a beauty parlour, furniture store and Hunters and Carters bakery.
At the north side of the cross roads, Crescent West becomes Rossall Road and here you’ll find Reliant TV – a large electronics store. Plus The Naked Sheep (a brilliant wool shop) and the independent Tiny Pug Records. There’s also takeaways, an accountants, opticians and beauty parlours here too. Still at the north side and across the tramway, Crescent East becomes Brighton Avenue and beyond The District (formerly the NatWest) on the corner there’s another opticians, dentists, and service businesses.
Further along Rossall Road…
Continue along Rossall Road heading towards Fleetwood and you’ll find even more shops! First up is Fivestar Services Euronics electrical appliances, Barret Podiatry and UQA Fashion Boutique. Past Rossall Windows and Fenton Funeral Directors there’s Frets Guitar Shop, T&J Hooley Tailors and J’s Direct Electrics. The next block of shops includes Rossall Mobile Phone Shop and Rossall Galleries (well worth a visit and packed with treasures). On the corner of Beach Road is Room 43 and Emma & I hairdressers with House of Aesthetics opposite.
Economic Car Parts, Kay’s Kitchen, Cake & Bake, Habeebas Indian, Londis convenience store, Maxim House Chinese takeaway, Woof ‘n’ Puss pet shop, Gotto’s barbers, First Response Appliances, the Nail Room and Wyre Locks
Cafes and Coffee Shops
When you’ve had a good look around the shops in Cleveleys, take the weight off your feet and visit one of the many cafes and coffee shops. Liberally spread around, this town centre caters for everyone with plenty of places to eat and drink. Enjoy The Shipwreck micropub and home cooking at The Coffee Bar. If a pint is more your thing there’s a variety of pubs and clubs too.
Markets
Back in the day there were a couple or three indoor markets in Cleveleys. But times change and fashions come and go. Victoria Market and the one which is now Poundland both closed. The Care for Cleveleys team has been trying hard for many years to get a market back into the town. They’re a great addition that adds interest and life and give people a reason to visit.
There’s been several incarnations of Cleveleys market. It started off at the Plaza at the seafront – perfect on a lovely day but not ideal when there’s anything more than a breeze! After the pandemic it had a brief stint at Cleveleys Community Centre – a good, indoor location but too far away from the town centre.
After a few persistent but poor weeks back at the seafront a new location was found, this time at Princes Road. A trial was held in September 2023 prior to pedestrianisation of the small side street to create an events and market space. It’s now a permanent home to Cleveleys weekly market, from Easter to September.
Charity Shops
As in all towns, there’s a fair representation of charity brands among the shops in Cleveleys. They have their place in the high street and serve a great purpose. It’s somewhere to take all of the perfectly good things that you no longer want instead of sending them to landfill. Charity shops are a great place to bag a bargain and pick up a rare find. They also raise significant amounts of money for the charity which they serve. Win-win all round!
Cleveleys charity shops are generally excellent stores – they’re well kitted out and stocked. In fact they’re a tourist attraction in their own right. It’s well known that they attract people to the town see what treasures and bargains they can find!
