Why is it called Thornton Cleveleys?
Thornton and Cleveleys are two separate places.
Cleveleys of course is the place next to the sea and Thornton the slightly inland area where you’ll find Marsh Mill windmill.
The name is believed to have come from the railway station of the Preston and Wyre Railway. It was called ‘Thornton for Cleveleys’.
Of course over the years the ‘for’ has been dropped leaving us with the name we are familiar with now.
