Cleveleys Christmas Lights

Cleveleys Christmas Lights

Traders, residents, schools, groups and the community have all worked hard to help to make the town sparkle this festive season, with Cleveleys Christmas Lights.

What’s happening with Cleveleys Christmas Lights this year?

In recent years, Christmas in Cleveleys has been a bit sorry for itself. While other towns have enjoyed celebrations and festivities, Cleveleys Christmas lights have been, well, lacking. It’s a shame because we’ve got an amazing community here, and it’s a lovely place, so Christmas is one of the few things that Cleveleys has been missing out on.

But not to worry, because this year, we’ve had not one, not two but three groups, all working together to make Cleveleys sparkle!

Take a look at this video of town centre shops, all trimmed up and twinkling. It was put together by Daniel Thornton from Phillips Jewellers. Dan has been working hard to encourage festive cheer and get the community pulling together.

Dan also organised the banners around the Christmas tree, encouraging people to shop local. Here are people from some of the Cleveleys businesses, saying Merry Christmas!

Christmas Cheer in Cleveleys

Cleveleys Christmas Lights

The Christmas Cheer in Cleveleys team is a small, new group of very enthusiastic volunteers, led by local women Scarlett Clegg and Kay Holding. They’re plotting and planning how the sparkle can be brought to town with Cleveleys Christmas Lights. First, they put together a programme of fundraising events to get enough money together to at least make a difference this year, and build on achievements in years to come.

A fun event for everyone – including Santa! – was held at the community centre after Switch On of the Cleveleys Christmas Lights.

Cleveleys Christmas Tree and Shop Window Competition #1

Cleveleys Christmas Lights

Cllr Andrea Kay remains the nominated representative for the Christmas Tree in Cleveleys. She arranged the switch on of Cleveleys Christmas lights on the tree in November.

Children from Northfold and Manor Beach Primary Schools led the celebration with carols around the tree. Plus a visit from Santa himself who helped switch on the Lights and handed out sweets to the children.

Remembrance hearts are on the tree again this year.

Cllr Kay is once again organising a Christmas shop window competition. Watch out for a letter which she is delivering to all shops and businesses about it. The children from Manor Beach and Northfold will judge the entries during the second week of December

Please contact Cllr Kay to arrange a heart and for more details.

Cleveleys Snowman & Shop Window Competition #2

Cleveleys Christmas Lights

Meanwhile, the town centre traders are well and truly in the Christmas spirit – with snowmen and festive shop windows! This plan is led by Daniel Thornton from Philips Jewellers.

Shopkeepers have got creative and made snowman to display at their door (or in the window). And, they’re all recycled!

  • The winner, as chosen by local schoolchildren, will get a crystal trophy. It’s laser etched with a Christmas image and wording, donated by Phillips Jewellers.

For details please contact Daniel at the Jewellers.

The following is archived information which has been published about Cleveleys Christmas Lights over the years. Take a walk down memory lane!

Light up a Life 2014

As usual, the crowds gathered at the back of the Vue Cinema where the glo-sticks were handed out and then everyone paraded along the seafront to the Plaza – in probably the best weather we’ve had for this event yet!

At the Plaza, Northfold primary and Manor Beach Primary both sang some lovely songs and performed for the assembled crowd. There were a few words from Paul Maynard MP, Visit Cleveleys and Rossall Beach Residents & Community Group, Rev Michael Payne and Cllr Andrea Kay.

Then everyone trooped along Victoria Road West, pausing to admire the fairy lights on the clock, to stop at the tree which is outside the Cancer Research Shop.

Cllr Andrea Kay remembered those no longer with us, and the lights were turned on, helped by special guest Paul Maynard MP. Finally the Dream Team Singers performed their choir music for the guests.

Clock Shelter Opening – 2014

Just before the switch on event in November 2014, a small opening ceremony was held for the Clock Shelter.

It was done before the crowds gathered because having a couple or three hundred people gathering in the roundabout in the road was simply not safe!

You can read the full story of the Clock Shelter and see photos here.

Christmas event at Cleveleys in November 2012

It was a fine, still evening, to celebrate the annual community Light Up a Life event. It’s a true celebration of everything that’s great about our community at Cleveleys.

Everyone met at the back of the Vue Cinema on the seafront at Cleveleys before walking to the Plaza area on the promenade. There was a festive singalong, and singing from the choirs at Manor Beach and Northfold Primary Schools.

We also remembered the ones we have loved and are no longer with us. These photos are from the event in 2012

At the Plaza area on the promenade, Manor Beach, Northfold and Rossall Primary school children entertained the crowds with some first class carol singing, while everyone joined in.

By this time the Glo-Sticks were lighting up the sky, and after the carol service everyone paraded up to the centre of Cleveleys to the tree outside the Cancer Research shop.

Remembering those who we have loved and lost, there were dedications and a short service. Names were read out from the Book of Memories held in Cleveleys Library

The tree was dedicated by Rev Michael Payne, and the lights were lit on the tree by a young member of the community. The Mayor of Wyre then led the crowd in singing ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’.

All in all, a lovely hour out inthe fresh air, enjoying the community spirit that’s so strong all year round in Cleveleys.
