During the heatwave at the end of May into June, there was a shiny, blue old fashioned bus parked on Princes Way just on the edge of Cleveleys.
Curiosity got the better of us and we had a chat with the owner, who generously invited us in for a look around, and offered to share his story.
Derek has owned his bus for 50 years, and has done all the restoration work himself. An ongoing work in progress, all the details are handmade, including the shiny chrome fender which curves around the front of the bus. All formed by hand, you’d swear that it had been done in a workshop by a machine.
Dereks is originally from the Bolton/Rochdale area, and lives the life of a globetrotter. He loves to come to Cleveleys to park at the side of the sea – and why not with the weather that we have enjoyed here recently. Princes Way is a very popular spot with the owners of motorhomes of all shapes and size – in summer the place is understandably packed out, but in winter it can get busy during the better weather. Cleveleys doesn’t shut for winter even if other seaside resorts do!
‘When the weather breaks, I’m setting off for India’ Derek told us. ‘It’s a trip that I’m expecting to take about 11 weeks, but there’s no rush to get there’.
He’s all set for the journey, with a self contained life aboard his shiny blue bus. He’s got a workshop and welding kit (and clearly knows how to use them), water tanks and enough freshwater to journey where he likes, and a boat that he carries on the roof.
Inside is a home from home, with all the mod cons, bedroom, galley, and of course a bathroom and shower.
Bon voyage Derek, and if you read this please get in touch and let us know how you are getting on!
