Shopping in Cleveleys by the Sea
Cleveleys town centre is quite compact, easy to get to and get around. It’s a comfortable place with benches, pavement cafes, public toilets and frequent street entertainment – all right next to the beautiful seafront. It’s a great place for a lovely day out, with shopping included.
Victoria Road West (above) is Cleveleys main shopping street. It runs at right angles to the coast, crossed by the main road to Fleetwood and the Blackpool tramway at The Crescent.
The coast road runs parallel to the seafront – with Blackpool to the south and Fleetwood to the north. The next photo is taken from the promenade with the sea behind you. Look past the Clock Shelter along Victoria Road West.
The main road from Blackpool to Fleetwood is the A587. It’s next to the tramway and they go through Victoria Road West at Cleveleys Square. This is where the main tram stops are, along with shops along the four sides of The Crescent (below). There are shopping areas on Victoria Road West on both sides of the tracks.
Variety of Shopping in Cleveleys
Cleveleys is a vibrant town with a good variety of shops. A local resident can actually manage quite nicely with the shops that are here, without ever having to go anywhere else. You can’t say that for the high streets in many other modern town centres!
There are plenty of independent food shops, including a number of local butchers, fishmongers, bakeries, cheese shops and green grocers. Cleveleys has national high street names, supermarkets and more.
There are clothing shops and chains, discount retailers and card shops. Plus a book shop, homewares and furniture stores. Visit the hairdressers, travel agents, banks and building societies. And for the thrifty among us of course there are charity shops. Possibly the only thing missing is the candlestick maker!
A bite to eat while you’re Shopping in Cleveleys
Cleveleys is particularly well catered for with places to eat.
There are cafes of all kinds along the length of the high street, most of which have outdoor eating facilities. It’s especially nice to sit outside on a sunny day and eat and drink while watching the world go by.
Dog Friendly Shopping in Cleveleys
Cleveleys is an ideal place to bring Fido if you are a pet lover – the husband has his choice of seats while you do the shopping!
There’s plenty to watch and people to chat to, then you can have a brew together at an outside table. Most of them even provide water for your four legged friend, there are so many canine visitors to Cleveleys.
Many local businesses are dog friendly, particularly if your pooch is small enough to be carried or travels in a dog pram.
You can spend a few hours here without even trying. There are quite often buskers playing so you can have ten minutes, sing along or even have a bit of a dance – and watch the shoppers go by.
If you like street music and would like to know when your favourite band is playing, join the Busking in Cleveleys Facebook Group. Have a listen to one of the buskers in Cleveleys in this next clip –
Throw in a cup of tea, a walk to the sea front, maybe an ice cream and a tour of the shops and it’s a great way to enjoy the day.
The postal address of ‘Thornton Cleveleys’ is actually two separate places. The name comes from the railway station which was ‘Thornton for Cleveleys’.
Thornton is the area slightly inland from the coast, beyond the A585 Amounderness Way. There are shopping areas at Marsh Mill (below) and at Thornton Village.
Marsh Mill Village is where you’ll see Marsh Mill Windmill, along with a complex of small shops, businesses, a pub and private houses. They’re all arranged around a pretty courtyard which hosts events and entertainment. There are further shops beyond the village along the main road.
Thornton Village is a pretty place, near to the now disused Thornton Railway station and railway line to Fleetwood. The station is being restored and is looked after by Poulton and Wyre Railway Society.
At Thornton Village you’ll find a supermarket, local shops and a post office.
Handy Local Shopping
Here in Cleveleys, as in many other areas around the Fylde Coast, local residents are lucky to still have many stretches of local shops in the community. Away from the bigger town centres they’re handy for those with limited transport.
There are shops along Rossall Road, at Anchorsholme Lane East (which is technically in Blackpool but very handy for Cleveleys). You’ll find local shops at Cleveleys Park and some others besides.
