The Artworks are Coming!

Added 19 February 2011

Anyone who is following the Sea Change project for Cleveleys will know that a childrens book is being written, which is called 'The Sea Swallow'. It's a fantasy story with the folklore and history of the Fylde Coast written into it, and it's set for publication this year, so we can't wait!

To share the story with everyone who comes to Cleveleys, the main threads of the story will be translated into pieces of public art to create a trail along the promenade at Cleveleys and around the coast to Fleetwood.

Planning permission is in at the moment for the first main batch of sculptures - starting with the centre piece on the promenade at the end of Victoria Road West, which is a 30' tall piece with the sea swallows at the top and the narrative of the story tumbling out of the back (below).

Beacon for Cleveleys

The project is very exciting and is designed to be a continuous thing that can be added to over the years, with involvement from different groups and which becomes part of the area and its community.

Another of the artworks is a shell blow hole (below). It's a 2m tall/wide empty shell with a hole in the top, positioned on the end of the rock groyne which runs out to the beach near the cafe. It faces into the tide so that when it comes in, the water bangs in and against the hole and spurts a blow of water into the air.
