Sightings in the sea at Cleveleys
Added 14 June 2010

There are often seals to be seen swimming at Cleveleys. Last week they were joined by a leatherback turtle!
I'd posted this photo on Facebook a few weeks ago, and since then the seals have been out in abdundance at Cleveleys. The children in the foreground are only just off the edge of the shore, and you can see the seal top left is only yards off the beach. Last week they were out in abundance, and on Saturday morning four were seen swimming together.
Cleveleys hit the news though last week when a walker spotted a rare, 6' long leatherback turtle swimming not far from shore. It was widely reported, in the papers and on the BBC website.
Apparently turtles have been seen in Lancashire before and spotted close to Blackpool, but it's very rare that you see them from shore. They come to UK waters just as our jellyfish are starting to bloom.
It's not easy making out what you are looking at in the sea. The marine animals bob up and down and go under water so you have to be quick with the binoculars to be sure of what you are seeing. He's a lucky guy who saw it, I bet he won't forget that!
