Our local wildlife

Added 10 August 2010

We've had a busy few weeks with the local wildlife - one seal in particular seems keen on enjoying Cleveleys!

We've had a few seal encounters, starting a few weeks ago with a dead one washed up, then a sheep (also dead!) came ashore, followed by more parts of seal (yuk!) which stink to high heaven!

In mid July we had the first visit from a live one which was seen on the beach. The walker who saw it was reaching for his phone to report it to the council as a dead body when it lifted it's head and waddled back to the water! Then the second one came up near the surface water outflow pipe at Rossall School. A small crowd of early morning walkers had a Thursday treat!

Seal at Cleveleys

Saturday morning brought the excitement when, again in the early morning, someone spotted another live one near the terminal groyne on North Promenade, and alerted the Residents Association.

Three members were out on the beach enjoying the photo opportunity, and one of them goaded it back into the water. It was rearing up to attack, which worked in its best interests as each time it aimed for a slice of human leg it ended up that little bit closer to the water! Eventually it waddled back in and away to its normal life.

Greay seal being encouraged back to sea

It's been seen several times since this week, each time back in the same spot on North Promenade. Maybe it's looking for the woman who waved sea weed at it, to come back out and play!
