Facebook and Cleveleys
Added 2 August 2010
Facebook is a type of what's called 'Social Media' - along with Twitter and YouTube and all the others it's a way of keeping in touch and making new friends.
People fall generally into two camps - the ones who like it and the ones who are suspicious and think a mad axeman is going to come after them after reading their profile! I'd say that it's like everything in life, if you are sensible and don't take silly risks and think about what you are doing, then there is no reason why you shouldn't enjoy using it.
Visit Cleveleys has a blog which is currently a one-way stream of chatter from the publishers. Eventually it might be changed to a forum where the public can add comments. Meanwhile, Facebook is the chosen way of having conversation with people from all over the country or world about our lovely Cleveleys. Posts are made every day - about things that are happening, titbits of news, links through to bigger articles on this site and sometimes just random musings!

We chose Facebook because it is so easy to use for everyone. If you haven't used it before here's a quick guide to get you started, although I'm not an expert by any means!
To access the site you need to create an account with a password, just like you would with any site that you use. If you want to use Facebook frequently you can leave it logged on so that each time you go back you don't have to log on again. I also have it on the Favourites bar at the top of the screen for ease.
I think you can look at pages without having your own profile, but you won't be able to make any comments or connect to people you know.
Making a profile is easy. Just select the option, add your basic details and away you go. You can edit your own profile, start by adding a photo so people can recognise you (maybe you'd prefer a disguise!) and be careful about how much personal information you add, for example you can abbreviate your birth date, omit your address, etc. The instructions are really easy to follow, and you can add photos from the picture file on your computer.
Now that you 'exist' you can start looking for people you know, or pages that you 'Like'. So if you type into the search box 'Visit Cleveleys' the logo will come up for you to click through to the page. At the top you'll see a button 'Like' so if you click on that you'll join the community. You 'Like' any type of business page and you become 'Friends' with individual people you know. You search for them in the same way, by typing a persons name in the search box.
Each time you come back to Facebook you'll get a personalised Home page with all the latest postings from your friends and pages you like, so you can easily follow the things that interest you!
A word of caution here, just be careful who you make friends with. I'd say it's safer to only accept people who you know in real life - and that way you can avoid the axeman!
This is a very simple guide to getting you started. I hope it's helpful, and it encourages you to join our Visit Cleveleys community! You can go straight through to the page with the 'F' icon at the top of this site, or access it directly from www.Facebook.com/visitCleveleys |
