How to get to Cleveleys

Cleveleys is on the north west coast, mid way between Blackpool and Fleetwood. It's quite easy to get to by road or by public transport - at worst just head north from Blackpool!

Getting to Cleveleys by car:

There are two main ways into Cleveleys, one through the countryside and one through Blackpool itself.

Leave the motorway network at the M55 signposted for Fleetwood and head down the A585 (avoiding peak times). This is the inland road through countryside and brings you to the back of Cleveleys. This route is particularly useful during the Illumination season when you should avoid Blackpool after dusk because of the heavy traffic.

Continue to the end of the M55 at Blackpool, and head straight forward and down Yeadon Way to the promenade – you can see the rollercoasters at the Pleasure Beach to your left and the tower to your right. At the promenade turn right and follow the coast road out of Blackpool, through Bispham and then to Cleveleys. If you are a visitor and not in a rush, this is a more scenic route.

Getting to Cleveleys by train:

Although there isn't a train station actually at Cleveleys, there are a number of choices in surrounding towns.

If you want to detour through Blackpool, you have a choice of Blackpool South (Waterloo Road), Blackpool North (Talbot Road), and the Pleasure Beach.

The nearest station to Cleveleys is at Breack Road, Poulton, 2.8 miles away.

Getting to Cleveleys by bus or tram:

A regular service of buses runs along the coast road from Blackpool through to Fleetwood, along with an inland bus service. There is a bus station at the back of the High Street on Rough Lea Road from which buses run that serve the surrounding areas.

The tram service through Cleveleys is currently disrupted because of major work to the tracks.

The new service will be fully operational through to Fleetwood Ferry from Easter 2012.

Have you ever been
on a tram to Cleveleys?

The old fashioned Blackpool trams are having a makeover. Disability legislation means that trams have to be easily accessible, which the old style trams aren’t, even though the drivers are helpful.

A major £85 million programme of overhaul is being carried out, and if you travel along the promenade you'll see tram lines being re-laid, platforms bring re-built, traffic lights being installed along with all manner of other works, to accommodate the new fleet of Bombardier trams which are due to come on stream in 2012.

These are the type of trams that are seen in city centres like Manchester and Sheffield – quick and smooth they will improve accessibility across the Fylde coast by public transport. There will be sixteen new 32m long, single deck trams with multiple doors and a seating capacity of around 70 people, with space for wheelchairs.

The scheme will introduce a modern, year round, 10 minute frequency fully accessible service between Starr Gate at the southern end of Blackpool, and Fleetwood. End to end journey times will be improved by 15 minutes, and you will be able to travel the full line in less than an hour.

The best of the historic trams will be kept and undergo minor modifications to their doors and steps to allow boarding from the new tram stop platforms and will supplement the new trams as a tourist attraction with a 10 minute service between the Pleasure Beach at Blackpool and Thornton Gate at the northern end of Cleveleys town centre during peak periods.

A new depot is currently being built at Starr Gate to house the new vehicles, and the old style heritage trams will be maintained from their existing workshop facilities.

Meanwhile, make the best of the old style trams at Cleveleys during 2010/11 as completion of the scheme and operation of the new vehicles is scheduled for Easter 2012.
