Enjoy the beach at Cleveleys

What a beautiful beach it is at Cleveleys! The central beach is entirely tidal and the clean golden sand covers twice a day, revealing a clean canvas each time. The construction of the promenade swirls the tide such that the beach adjoining the new sea defences is kept clean and very little flotsam and jetsam (marine rubbish) is deposited by the tide.

Cleveleys has a beautiful clean sandy beach where you can enjoy family fun all year round

The sand here is ideal for sandcastles, playing games, and a day out at the coast. The spanish steps make access to the beach incredibly easy, and if you’d like to take your pram or someone in a wheelchair, there is ramp access too.

Further south (heading to Blackpool) the final phase of the new Cleveleys sea defences were completed in 2010 and finish at the boundary with Blackpool. Blackpool Council are investigating the feasability of replacing the sea defences on Princes Prom, but currently, there is a traditional sea wall there, with steps down to the beach. At high tide it’s interesting to watch how the power of the water is affected by the two adjacent types of construction. The steps on the Cleveleys section disperse the energy of the waves, and although water may come up and over the first level it’s in a sweeping trickle. By stark contrast, the waves hit the adjoining wall of the Blackpool defences only feet away with some force, and the water slaps up and over the wall onto the promenade in a spectacular display of water and spray (with flooding consequences for the road).
