The beach at Cleveleys on the north west Fylde Coast provides ideal conditions for some watersports like kite surfing, and fishing, and beach activities like kite flying and horse riding.
The kitesurfers are around for most of the year, with people regularly coming from all over the north west to catch a wave at Cleveleys. There is a big kite surfing club at Fleetwood, and when the tide isn’t right there, they come round to Cleveleys. It’s fascinating to watch them zipping up and down the water, jumping and doing acrobatics and making it look oh-so-easy by controlling the kites like you would a feather in your hand. Cleveleys is favoured because of the tide and the suitability of the waves, plus there is beach front parking which makes it easy getting all the gear down to the beach.
Wyre Boat Angling Club is based at the side of The Venue, and members regularly take their boats down the slip way onto the beach for a day in the water to catch fish like Mackerel and Tope. Sea anglers come from all over the UK to fish from the shores, and match days are especially interesting when fishermen are lined up on the full length of the beach, catching codling, whiting, flatties and rockling.
Let’s face it, there isn’t usually a shortage of wind at the coast, and Cleveleys is no exception. That makes it an ideal place to come and fly a kite – an ordinary one that you bought in a shop, or made yourself, or whether you prefer something a little, well, larger scale, and you need a harness to hold it down! There are even Kiting Festivals at Cleveleys with demonstrations, try-outs and interactive fun for all the family.
There are a number of stables nearby and riders on horseback are often to be seen, cantering through the water and up and down the beach. You can only imagine how much the horses must enjoy it (but of course someone has to clean them down later!). People have even been seen bringing their horses out for the day to Cleveleys – parking the box and taking their equine friends on the beach for an afternoon out. Now that must have been a much loved and spoiled pet!
