Cleveleys has been very lucky to have almost all of its promenade completely rebuilt in recent years, in a modern and attractive design that is also extremely user friendly. The design incorporates easy access with steps and ramps on the top sections, and the entire length of the sea wall is formed in stepped revetments so access to the beach is unrestricted. The two tier level allows for the incorporation of a ‘bench’ which runs the full length, and this is supplemented by cast picnic tables and chairs and the most comfortable granite benches that you could imagine (particularly when they are warmed by the sun!) so you’ll always find somewhere to sit and enjoy the view!
The new promenade and sea defence works at Cleveleys were started in November 2005, and the first phase of work cost £20 million. The completed length of sea defences will protect 7,693 properties from tidal flooding with less than a half percent risk of breach in any one year. This takes account of sea level rise predicted as a result of climate change. At the same time, it has the benefit of creating a new promenade which is a modern and attractive tourist attraction for the 21st Century, which has also stimulated the regeneration of the Cleveleys area.
The icon links to Google Street Maps at the Plaza area which is the outdoor entertainment area central to the high street and Cleveleys town centre. You can see the sea and how close the road is to the beach, but unfortunately the photos don't extend to the other side of the sea wall, so enjoy the slideshow for those images! Follow North Promenade to your right and you'll see the planting areas behind the seawall, access points onto the beach, the stylish shelters and lights, and how superb this new construction really is.
The Peoples Promenade is an award winning promenade, and to date has won 21 accolades, including:
